Can you recycle carpets & rugs?
Carpet can't go in household recycling. Most recycling centres accept it, though many charge for large quantities or treat it as general waste. Carpet recycling schemes exist but are patchy — some centres send it for energy recovery. Fitting firms often take away old carpet for a fee.
Tips
- Cut into rolls you can lift — many centres require it
- Offcuts in good condition are wanted on freecycle for pets, sheds and cars
Which bin does it go in?
Recycling centre (carpet or general container) — never kerbside.
Check booking, proof-of-address and vehicle rules before travelling.
