Simpler Recycling: what changed in England in 2026 and what comes next
England's Simpler Recycling rules are intended to make the main household recycling streams more consistent. The national categories are standardised, but councils can still use different containers and collection arrangements.
Household requirements from 31 March 2026
Waste collection authorities are required to arrange collection of the core recyclable waste streams from households, subject to the legislation and any applicable transitional arrangements.
- Paper and card
- Plastic
- Metal
- Glass
- Food waste, collected at least weekly where the requirement applies
- Garden waste, with councils able to charge for the service
Councils can collect dry materials together or separately where the rules permit. The colour and number of bins are not nationally fixed.
Food-waste transitions
Some councils have approved transitional arrangements affecting the date on which weekly household food-waste collection must begin. Check your council's current service rather than assuming every area changed on the same day.
Plastic film from 31 March 2027
The plastic stream expands to include plastic film and flexible packaging from 31 March 2027. Until your council introduces that service, follow the pack label and use a participating supermarket collection where available.
Why local checking still matters
The national material categories are becoming more consistent, but presentation rules, container types, collection days, contamination policies and specialist services remain local. Use your postcode for the final instruction.
