Researchers find college-educated population more likely to shelter during dangerous wildfire smoke
American adults with college degrees now outlive those without degrees by more than eight years, in part because graduates appear to be more proactive about protecting their health. For example, they smoke cigarettes at far lower rates and follow cancer screening advice more often, especially after a relative is diagnosed. Even as studies documented such disparities, the health gap widened.

Predicting where wildfire smoke will go next
In recent summers, wildfire smoke has been inescapable across Wisconsin, drifting south from Canada and leading to long stretches of poor air quality. Whether that smoke clears or lingers is often influenced in part by the atmospheric boundary layer—the lowest part of the atmosphere, where airborne particles mix and move.

A healthier global diet could cut farm emissions by 85%
A global shift toward healthier diets could sharply reduce livestock farming, free up agricultural land, and cut emissions from land-use change by 85% by 2050. At the same time, fruit, vegetable, nut, and legume production could soar, creating a sweeping transformation of what the world grows and eats.

Fig-leaf enzyme turns tannery waste into high-value collagen
Tanneries generate large quantities of skin trimmings before hides are tanned. These trimmings contain collagen but are commonly treated as low-value waste. An international research team has developed a method that uses ficin, a protein-digesting enzyme obtained from fig leaves, to recover type I collagen from lambskin trimming waste.
