UK should commit to a 60% cut in emissions by 2030 as a contribution to global efforts to combat climate change – 7 December 2010
The Committee on Climate Change today recommended a carbon budget for 2023-27 and a target for emissions reductions in 2030 – halfway between now and 2050. The recommended target for 2030, to cut emissions by 60% relative to 1990 levels (46% relative to current levels), would then require a 62% emissions reduction from 2030 to meet the 2050 target in the Climate Change Act.

Climate change is already having an impact in the UK. Since the 1970s, average annual temperatures have risen by 1°C, and Spring arrives 11 days earlier. These impacts are likely to increase as a result of future climate change, with the incidence of extreme weather events such as floods, heat-waves and droughts becoming more frequent.
