Can you recycle gas cylinders and canisters?

Pressurised gas cylinders can explode in bin lorries and waste plants, so they must never go in any bin. Large bottles (Calor, Flogas, BBQ propane) legally remain the supplier's property — return them to any stockist, often with a deposit refund. Small camping gas canisters and empty helium balloon cylinders go in the dedicated gas-cylinder cage at recycling centres; pierce-type camping canisters must be completely empty.

• Calor bottles: any stockist takes them back, deposit refundable
• Recycling centres have a gas cylinder cage — ask staff
• Nitrous 'laughing gas' canisters go in the same cage, never bins
