Gypsum releases toxic hydrogen sulphide when landfilled with organic waste, so plasterboard must be kept separate by law. Recycling centres have dedicated plasterboard containers (some charge as DIY waste). Recycled gypsum goes back into new board.

- Keep it dry — wet plasterboard may be refused
- Offcuts from big jobs: builders' merchants run take-back for full sheets
