Can you recycle disposable lighters?

🚫 Not recyclable

General waste only when COMPLETELY empty — never recycling

View saved list

Disposable lighters are a known cause of recycling-plant fires: they must never go in any recycling bin. Once completely empty of fuel (hold the valve down until no hiss remains), they go in general waste. Refillable lighters can be refilled indefinitely; broken part-full lighters can be taken to the recycling centre's hazardous point.

Tips

  • Empty the gas fully before binning
  • Never in recycling — they explode in balers
